How Astilbe Sees Therapy
All of us have an inner capacity for growth and healing — it's like a tiny seed that each of us carry, no matter what has happened to us or how we've been treated by others.
Like a flower, that instinctual capacity to grow and thrive is much harder to access when we're under stress, stuck in survival mode, or without enough external support and care. I like to think of therapy as a greenhouse — one with consistent and attuned support, shared curiosity, and evidence-based care that allows you to develop new neural pathways towards positive change.
Our Team
Dr. Grace Johnson
Psy.D. -Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Practice Owner | License Number: 025177
Dr. Johnson is a queer psychologist who provides psychotherapy to individuals and partners in New York. She helps clients explore long standing patterns (often developed early in childhood) while also building skills to address daily stressors in order to facilitate long-lasting change. She has clinical experience and training in in integrative therapy, LGBTQIA+ experience and identity, affirming care for historically marginalized groups, community building, nature and art based therapy, trauma responses including alterations in consciousness and other survival adaptations, emotion dysregulation and overregulation, attachment and relationship patterns, and evidenced based treatments for obsessive compulsive and anxiety disorders. Dr. Johnson understands how daunting it can be to begin or re-initiate therapy. She strives to provide a welcoming, non-stigmatizing, holistic, and safe experience for her clients.
Dr. Johnson welcomes clients of all identities and backgrounds. She also understands that shared identity can foster deep therapeutic trust. As a part of the LGBTQIA+ community herself and a psychologist trained in affirming care, she brings both lived experience and clinical expertise to her work with queer clients.
Dr. Johnson earned her PsyD in Clinical Psychology at The University of Hartford in 2021 and completed her Pre-Doctoral Internship and Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Northwell Health. Her doctoral research focused on anomalous experiences of the self and trauma in adults with schizophrenia.
When Dr. Johnson is not at work she is most likely growing flowers, spending time with her partner and community, or going on adventures with Miss Honey, her Newfoundland puppy!
Casey Milliman
Casey serves as the point person at Astilbe for any non-clinical questions or concerns. She helps clients with scheduling, insurance, and more. Casey manages various administrative functions for the practice, engages in educational opportunities, and assists with clinical research.
In 2022, she received her Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO), and this fall she will begin a Master’s in Social Work program. With her MSW, she hopes to work with traditionally underserved persons in her community while continuing her allyship and advocacy work. In her spare time, she loves hiking with her dog and friends, skiing, going to the movies, and exploring as much of her home state of Colorado as she can!
